The tool assesses how well each pixel (parcel of land) matches 22 different criteria that relate to whether or not land is suitable for native woodland. Some criteria are positive in the sense that if the pixel matches this criteria it is more suitable for woodland than a pixel that does not. Other criteria are negative and if the pixel matches this criteria it is less suitable for woodland. The sum of the scores for each criteria produce a value that relates to the suitability of that pixel for woodland. The tool predicts this for all pixels in Aberdeenshire except those that are excluded such as urban areas, existing woodland, montane habitats. The diagram below illustrates the criteria used here. In this model each pixel is 25 m square.
